NVP CEO Mindshare Summit: A playful microsite for a lively gathering of minds
Norwest Venture Partners selected Baunfire to build a unique landing page for their event, CEO Mindshare Summit, an exclusive retreat for CEOs running the venture capital firm’s portfolio companies. The two-day event in Half Moon Bay, California, brought together luminaries and thought leaders from across industries, from NPR’s “How I Built This” host Guy Raz to the Golden State Warriors’ General Manager, Bob Myers.
Likewise, the event itself was a blend of informational workshops and fun activities, and the goal of the site was to reflect the convivial spirit of the event: Lively and grounded in masterminding, but not strictly formal.
A departure from a traditional corporate look
We based our design decisions on the core aesthetic of “play,” which resulted in several aspects of the site being notably different from conventional renderings of corporate landing pages. For instance, we utilized a scrolling open layout rather than a site based on a sectioned grid, and we looked at real-world magazines and items for inspiration versus digital artifacts. We additionally used irregular shapes and flourishes to soften the page and impart an organic feel. Combined, these considerations resulted in a page that was both inviting and engaging.
Utilizing motion for a buoyant experience
We peppered the page with animations and microinteractions — like buttons that emulate progress bars, a rotating badge, page transitions that look like window shades, and image zooms on hover — to generate surprise and delight for the user.
Pops of color bestow vibrancy
We were able to maintain a balanced, high-contrast website by using a navy blue color as a foundation and then adding salmon and mustard embellishments to preserve a youthful atmosphere.
Drawing inspiration from editorial styles
We chose a serif heading font inspired by magazines and newspapers to go with a modern sans serif body typeface, and displayed text across the site in unusual ways. For example, we used vertical headings to add aesthetic appeal as well as to help unconventionally divide content, and we also displayed the event location in a circular text ornament for levity.
A seamless mobile experience
With so many users accessing websites for the first time from their mobile devices, we are meticulous about making sure our designs make an impactful first impression regardless of the screen it’s viewed on.
